First Grade News
This week we will be having all reading groups and homework folders going home even though it is a short week.
Remember, we will be having our “red word” test next Friday so this wee we will be practicing spelling them. We will also be focusing on reading vowel team words this week. This is a skill the first graders should be able to read but are not responsible to spell until 2nd grade. Vowel team words are two vowels together in the same word, as in “team”. The first vowel is long the second vowel says nothing (ex. boat). I have the children practice putting a line across the first vowel (as a reminder it is long) and “x” out the second vowel (as a reminder it doesn’t say anything). There will be a list of words to practice reading at home. I have introduced this skill but all children could use more practice.
In math we took a quiz on comparing number through subtraction. On a whole the class did great it was very short and easy. We will be getting back to our first 2 minute timed math facts tests. All of the Christmas activities got us off track but we will start back this week. We will continue to go over which strategy is the fastest to use depending on the problem. You can help your child with this by studying the double facts (ex. 7+7) the kids made and sent home. The children who know them quickly can easily add or subtract one or two to the fact. We will be beginning our next unit on graphing.
In science we will continue to work on light energy. The kids had fun last week experimenting with different materials to see which one the light would pass through. They learned some big science words such as: translucent, transparent and opaque.
Our mass is next Friday and all the mass parts went home last week in our homework folders. If you have any questions please let me know.
This week a Catholic School’s Week flier will be coming home with all the special events that are planned for the week. I hope to see you at some of the events planned for the week. It sounds like a lot of fun!
This week we will also be learning about Martin Luther King and what made this man so special. The children will be writing and illustrating their “Dreams for the World”.
Monday: math sheet
Tuesday: read vowel team word list
Wednesday: study for red word test
Thursday: library – return your books

**no school Monday, Jan. 21st
**Please make sure your child is reading with you at least 10 minutes a night. The extra practice REALLY makes a difference. I have been doing reading evaluations for the upcoming report cards and it is AWESOME to see everyone’s growth.
